Coventry – Sunderland Prediction and Preview

  • Coventry may be experiencing an uptick in form at a pivotal part of the season, after their 2-0 win over Rotherham in midweek secured back-to-back Championship wins for the first time since November. Mark Robins’ men have now taken ten points from a possible 15 in their last five matches (W3, D1, L1), propelling them to within five points of the play-off places.
  • The Sky Blues will return to the Coventry Building Society Arena confident they can reel in the top-six even further, having lost only once in their last 11 home league matches (W6, D4). A visit from Sunderland should raise confidence levels further, since Coventry have lost only one of the last 15 H2Hs on their own turf (W10, D4).
  • Sunderland sit four points and three places above their hosts in the Championship table, although having also played Rotherham in their last game, a 2-1 defeat could provide yet another psychological boost to Coventry. Manager Tony Mowbray will look to swing the tide back in his team’s favour though, having had the edge over Coventry as a manager by losing only three of his 14 H2Hs (W7, D4).
  • The Black Cats will look to go on the prowl on the road once again, after amassing an impressive ten-game unbeaten streak away from home prior to the Rotherham loss (W5, D5). Sunderland have prided themselves on fighting fire with fire in those games too, with all but two of those 11 matches seeing both teams find the back of the net.
  • Key battle: These two sides played out a 1-1 draw on the opening day of the season and the goalscorers from that day will go head-to-head once again. Coventry’s Viktor Gyökeres has scored his side’s opener in nine of his 13 Championship goalscoring outings this season while Sunderland’s Jack Clarke has gone on to score five of his last seven goals away from home.
  • Hot stat: Sunderland have seen a league-high 56 goals scored in the second-half of their games this season.
