Bournemouth – Tottenham Prediction and Preview

  • A dream start at Anfield last weekend soon turned sour for Bournemouth (L 3-1), whose return of one point from the first two Premier League (PL) rounds is their worst since losing their first four matches in 2017/18. While that campaign ended in a respectable 12th place finish, the Cherries’ current return of one point from the last 18 available suggests a long and tough road ahead for new boss Andoni Iraola, despite over €127m of expenditure on new talent to date this summer.
  • The defence has proven badly porous on home turf lately too, with just a solitary clean sheet in home league matches so far during 2023 (W3, D3, L5). But if nothing else, the absence of Harry Kane in opposition will be a morale booster, especially as Tottenham ran out winners by a 3+ goal margin in each of his four goalscoring H2Hs against Bournemouth.
  • Tottenham’s first post-Kane win came via a scintillating performance last weekend, when Manchester United crumbled 2-0 to keep the Lilywhites unbeaten in 2023/24. That performance has setup new boss Ange Postecoglou to potentially become the fourth Spurs manager in the past decade alone to take 7+ points from his opening three PL games in charge.
  • Current odds suggest that Spurs’ new manager will achieve this accolade. And if he does so with a win, that will also avenge April’s shock 3-2 loss in the latest H2H. Spurs retain a dominant PL H2H record though (W8, D2 L2), including coming from 2-0 down to win by the same scoreline on their last PL visit to the Vitality Stadium (October 2022).
  • Players to watchAntoine Semenyo got Bournemouth a third-minute lead last time out – his first strike since January 2022 to arrive inside the opening ten minutes. A few hours later, Pape Sarr netted for Spurs against Man Utd, meaning that his last two goals have been match openers, while it was also a second matchwinner across his previous three strikes.
  • Hot streak: Both teams have scored in each of Spurs’ last seven PL away games.
