AS Roma – Torino Prediction and Preview

  • Three days after their midweek commitments, Roma and Torino resume their push for European football five months after a 1-1 stalemate in Turin. Roma needed 120 minutes and penalties to advance to the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League, and with four wins from their last five Serie A games (L1) they’re in contention to qualify for a third consecutive Europa League group stage via a fifth-place finish.
  • A 4-2 loss at home to runaway league leaders Inter in their last home outing was an unwanted setback, but they should remain on track to challenge for the top five if they can continue winning regularly at home to the 14 clubs starting the round beneath them in the standings (W8, D2). This should be an especially meaningful encounter for new head coach Daniele de Rossi, who scored the first of his more than 60 goals for Roma against Torino at this very venue in 2003.
  • Torino are in a similar situation where they cannot defeat higher ranked opponents regularly enough to continue climbing up the rankings. This was most recently evident on Thursday evening when they conceded twice after half-time to fall 2-0 at home to Lazio. But their head coach Ivan Jurić spoke like a winner after the match, congratulating his players and asserting they “will win a lot of games” with similar performances.
  • Their travelling history suggests they’ll probably have to take things to another level here, especially considering Torino have lost all five Serie A away games to clubs starting this round above them by an aggregate score of 11-1. They even failed to score more than once away to all clubs other than relegation candidates Salernitana (W 3-0) and Cagliari (W 2-1) this league season, as well as in each of their last three visits to Roma (D1, L2), signalling the difficulty of the task ahead of them.
  • Players to watch: Roma’s 18-year-old Dutch defender Dean Huijsen is catching the eye not just because of his towering height, but his proactivity in attack. He and Torino’s Duván Zapata were both on the scoresheet in each of their club’s last two Serie A wins.
  • Hot streak: Roma are unbeaten in their last 22 competitive home games as a pre-match favourite (W17, D5 including extra time and penalties).
