Match Preview
Two sides desperate to bid adieu to their ‘underperforming tags’ will come face-to-face when Bordeaux host Caen in a Ligue 1 (L1) fixture this week. With both sides close together in the table and keen to avoid getting dragged into the relegation battle, there couldn’t have been a better context to this match.
The hosts are 13th in the table after 20 games (23pts), but are only four points ahead of the bottom three. It has been a case of steady decline for Bordeaux, who started the season with a seven-match unbeaten run (W4, D3, L0), only to slump in the next 13 matches (W2, D2, L9). In this regard, their 1-0 win over Troyes at the weekend couldn’t have come at a better time!
The visitors are in the middle of a poor run of form themselves and at 12th in the table (24pts), they are only a point better off than their hosts. Their troubles in L1 have seen them pick just one win in their last nine L1 encounters (W1, D3, L5). Again, this is not as poor as their hosts this week, but that is no solace!
Bordeaux have picked up just one win in their last seven matches (W1, D0, L6) in all competitions, that includes a two-match losing streak at home. For Caen, there is no joy of a win in their last six L1 matches (W0, D2, L4).
Key battles: Caen have scored a league-low 12 goals in L1 this year. And, six of those goals (50%) were scored by Ivan Santini. The striker has been the lone beacon in the palette of Caen’s scant goals.
That won’t be the case for Bordeaux’s Malcom, who has seven goals and five assists so far this season. The 20-year-old is linked with the exit door at Bordeaux, but whilst it lasts, enjoy the exciting form of the Brazilian.
Stat attack: Caen have scored just once in their last four L1 matches, while in nine away matches they went goalless in six games (67%) and in the process, scored more than one goal only once (11%). Four of the 12 goals (33%) that Caen has scored, have come after the 75th minute.
