Match Preview
Watford’s long awaited for win over Greater London-rivals Chelsea was further extended by a late comeback in October’s reverse fixture, as a 2-1 lead at Stamford Bridge turned into a galling 4-2 defeat.
The Hornets’ disastrous first Premier League season of ‘99/’00 saw the last time Watford beat Chelsea – a 1-0 victory that is Watford’s only win in their last eighteen meetings.
This match could see Watford’s status as the worst home side in the league (over a 12-game period) become further embellished, with the Hertfordshire club taking just 13 points from a possible 36 in 2017/18.
Though Chelsea are favourites, Antonio Conte is surely fearing for his job after a 3-0 midweek surprise defeat to Bournemouth. Nonetheless, Conte is determined to stay, saying: “I still have 18 months of contract with Chelsea. My intention, my will, is to respect the contract.”
Chelsea will fancy their chances of winning if they are ahead at half-time – they are the only club in the entire league not to drop a single away point after leading on six occasions at the break.
Players to watch: For Watford, Gerard Deulofeu could feature for the first time, having joined on loan from Barcelona. The ex-Evertonian has an 81% La Liga pass completion rate in ‘17/’18.
Olivier Giroud is the first Gunner to sign for rivals Chelsea since Ashley Cole – a proven super-sub, Giroud equalled Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s 17 goals from the bench; he may make his debut here, as out-of-form Alvaro Morata struggles with the hectic Chelsea schedule.
Stat attack: Chelsea have scored first in four out of their last five matches, while Watford are on a drought of three games without a goal.
Watford have scored the most goals out of any team in the bottom twelve, and have the ability to cause an upset here. However, they have conceded over twice the number of goals that Chelsea have.
