Maximum points went to Vitesse in the reverse fixture (2-0) after Matt Miazga scored a header from a Mason Mount corner kick in the dying minutes (87’). A fast break and goal by Bryan Linssen then finished Den Haag off in added time (90+4’).
Win, lose or draw, Vitesse will remain in the Europa League (EL) play off positions. The top three (AZ Alkmaar, Ajax and PSV) are more than eight points away – and it looks like it will stay that way.
After round 22 last year Den Haag were bottom of the table (18th) with 17 points. This season after round 22, depending on other results, they could move into eighth place and can start to think about the EL play-offs with a succession of wins.
Den Haag coach Alfons Groenendijk spoke about Vitesse in a recent pre-match interview: “We know they are a good team with a lot of quality, we have to be curious, hopefully we can deliver in a difficult evening and win points here”.
Players to watch: Den Haag’s Norwegian striker Bjorn Johnsen is on fire with six goals in six games. Unfortunately for him they have only led to one win. Nine goals this season makes him the fourth top scorer in Eredivisie.
Nineteen-year-old English midfielder Mason Mount has come from the Chelsea U23 team to score six goals in 16 games for Vitesse. He has scored three goals in his last four games, of which two of the goals were match winners.
Stat attack: In the reverse fixture Den Haag failed to record a shot on target and Nigerian defender Tyronne Ebuehi received two yellow cards.
The clubs have been battling since 1955 and the biggest win in history was Den Haag’s 6-1 win over Vitesse in ERE 14/15. After 58 games between the teams, Den Haag have a record of: W20, D16, L22.
Den Haag’s eleven home games this season have produced a total of 35 goals – an average of 3.1 goals per game.
Vitesse currently have the fourth best away record in the league (W6, D2, L3), and have scored 20 goals on their travels – an average of 1.8 goals scored per away game. In the last five away games against Den Haag, Vitesse have won 16 corners, a low average of 3.2 corners won per game.
