Match Preview
Angers will be looking to keep up with their battle for top-flight survival when they welcome high flyers Monaco to the Stade Raymond-Kopa in their Ligue 1 (L1) showdown on Saturday.
It has been an erratic run of results of late for the 16th-placed hosts, who have accrued a meagre total of 25 points from 24 L1 games.
Defeats away to Rennes and Montpellier this year have added to Angers’ poor run – a 1-0 win against fellow strugglers Amiens, which preceded their latest defeat, served just one of few positives for Stephane Moulin’s side.
Monaco are winless on the road so far this year, and talk of maintaining the league title now is farfetched – third place and 12 points adrift of pace setters Paris Saint Germain, means, at best, they could clinch the final Champions League place or even pip Olympique Marseille to second-place, who are just one point above them.
Moreover, Monaco’s total goal haul of 56 is second only to PSG’s 75 goals, while Angers have managed less than 15 goals at home, and have conceded 37 in total – the sixth-worst defence in the division!
With many of Monaco’s top players out injured or missing through suspension, could Angers earn a scrappy home result?
Players to watchKarl Toko Ekambi has scored eleven times for Angers in L1 this season, his last goal coming in the 2-1 defeat to Montpellier. He will surely fancy his chances against a highly-rated Monaco defence.
With Colombian Radamel Falcao expected to be out injured for upto three weeks – two-goal Stevan Jovetic may lead the line. New wonderkid signing Pietro Pellegri is rumoured to get his debut in this game.
Stat attack: Monaco are unbeaten in each of their last nine L1 games; however, they have won just twice in their last five.
There have been at least three goals scored in seven of Monaco’s last eight games; meanwhile Angers have won in each of their last three home fixtures.
