Match Preview
This will be Tottenham’s first ever trip to Turin, with the North London side reaching the 1/8 final as winners of a tough group that also contained reigning holders Real Madrid. Juventus were comfortable qualifiers of Group D, but did not travel as well as they would have liked. This makes their first competitive match against Tottenham a very important one.
It has been a long time since Tottenham last tasted European glory, winning the 1984 UEFA Cup on penalties against Anderlecht. Juventus, meanwhile, are without a major, recognised European trophy since 1996.
Tottenham’s record against Italian opposition is respectable, but not amazing. They have lost just three times in 15 competitive games against teams from Italy.
Juventus’ complete record against English opposition stands at: W18, D13, L15 – an overall win rate of 39.1%.
Juventus and Tottenham were drawn from seeding pots one and three respectively in the Group Stage draw, with pot one usually reserved for league champions and cup holders. In three attempts Tottenham have never yet beaten a ‘pot one’ side away from home in the Champions League (CL).
Players to watch: Gonzalo Higuain (JUV) and Harry Kane (TOT) will be a matchup for the ages, with the latter being second in the CL scoring charts on six goals.
Tottenham’s second-choice striker Fernando Llorente is particularly relishing the prospect of taking on his former club, stating: “It (Juventus) is a special club because, despite being an enormous club, it’s like a family inside.”
Stat attack: Both sides currently are on a combined total of 27 games unbeaten in their respective leagues.
Statistics predict a low-scoring encounter – in their domestic leagues, they have played out a combined total of ten games out of twelve with less than 2.5 goals.
