Match Preview
Strasbourg’s Ligue 1 (L1) season started in an unpromising manner, but their luck started to change after a surprise 2-1 win over PSG in the 16th round. Since then, their match record of W4, L5 has been sufficient to leave the relegation zone behind and place them nearer the top half of the table.
Morale at the Stade de la Meinau is also high due to Strasbourg’s performance in the Coupe de France. After dispatching Grenoble (3-0 away), the team from Northeastern France is set to face FC Chambly in the quarterfinals.
On the other hand, confidence at the Parc des Princes is likely to be shaken after a tough defeat to Real Madrid (3-1 away) in the Champions League this week. Also, PSG will need to overcome the absence of Kylian Mbappé (suspended) in order to maintain their average of three goals scored per L1 match.
When PSG and Strasbourg met back in December in the Coupe de France, the latter’s defensive flaws were evident: goalkeeper Alexandre Oukidja conceded an easy goal to Ángel di María and defender Yoann Salmier scored an OG when the match was still at 0-0. This helps to explain why PSG’s opponent has a goal difference of -12 in L1.
Players to watch: Despite playing as a defensive midfielder, Jean-Eudes Aholou is having a positive impact on Strasbourg this season. With four goals scored so far in L1, the 24-year-old Ivory Coast U23 player is tied with centre-forward Nuno da Costa as the team’s top scorer.
On the other side, Edinson Cavani is fully recovered from the hip injury that saw him sit out last match against Toulouse. He has played 22 of PSG’s 23 games in L1 this season and scored 21 times.
Stat attack: PSG have scored in 30 consecutive matches in all competitions and Unai Emery’s side have scored 129 goals in 39 matches this season in all competitions.
Strasbourg will hope to keep up with their average of two goals scored against PSG in their last two encounters.
