Match Preview
By a quirk of fate, Garry Monk’s first game in charge at Birmingham is against the very Middlesbrough side with which he launched a failed battle plan for promotion, way back in August 2017.
Birmingham have been in woeful form recently, losing each of their last five Championship games, in a run that has seen them slip into the bottom three. The Blues have conceded 12 goals in that time, which equates to 2.4 goals per game on average.
The Blues are also the league’s lowest scorers with just 23 goals from 35 league games. They score on average 0.6 goals per game.
Victory for Middlesbrough will represent the completion of their first league double over Birmingham since 2005/06. On the whole, Middlesbrough have a brilliant record against Birmingham of late – they are unbeaten in each of the last seven Championship meetings between the sides (W3, D4).
Former Middlesbrough manager Steve McLaren recently reserved high praise for Adama Traore, following an incredible performance against Leeds after having a red card overturned. McLaren said: “Traore tore them apart, and Bamford finished them off”, in a game which saw Boro revive their charge to the playoffs.
Players to watch: A lethal partnership is forming between Traore and Boro teammate Patrick Bamford. The latter of the two has five goals in his last three games, whilst Traore has set up two goals in that time.
Jacques Maghoma (BIR) has been directly involved in the most league goals of any City player, with four goals and four assists to date.
Stat attack: Middlesbrough have scored exactly three goals in each of their last three championship games, but they have not put that many past Birmingham since 2013/’14.
When Birmingham lose, they often lose badly. 16 of Birmingham’s 21 losses this season have been to nil (76%).
