Match Preview
Saturday’s early La Liga (LL) kick-off sees Real Madrid face a tricky trip to Eibar four days after finishing off the job in style against PSG in the Champions League last-16 with a 2-1 win at the Parc des Princes.
Eighth-placed Eibar (39 pts, W11, D6, L10) host Madrid on the back of a 1-1 draw away to Deportivo La Coruña. Jose Luis Mendilibar’s side find themselves just two points adrift of the top six ahead of this weekend’s games.
It has been a disastrous LL title defence for Madrid, who currently sit third in the table (54 pts, W16, D6, L5) – seven points behind Atletico and an almost unassailable 15 points adrift of runaway leaders Barca with just 11 games to go. That being said, Los Blancos seem to have all but secured a top-four finish as there’s now a huge nine-point gap between them and fifth-placed Sevilla.
Eibar have never won a competitive game against Madrid (D2, L7). The two sides have gone head-to-head seven times in the top-flight, with six wins for Madrid and one draw. In the reverse fixture earlier this campaign, Zinedine Zidane’s men claimed a 3-0 victory.
Players to watch: Eibar’s central midfielder Joan Jordán has five goals (19 shots, 11 on target) and two assists in LL so far this season.
Gareth Bale, who has netted eight goals in 17 league outings (13 starts) this campaign, is set to return to Madrid’s starting XI after coming off the bench for the final 14 minutes against PSG. Bale’s season has been frustratingly hampered by injury.
Stat attack: Eibar have been awarded the joint-fewest penalties (one) in LL this term, while Madrid have been given six spot-kicks. They have conceded four penalties apiece.
Real Madrid have won none of the nine LL games (D5, L4) in which they have gone into the break all square so far this season.
