Match Preview
Marseille travel to Spain with a 3-1 lead from the first-leg and will be looking to avenge their exit from the Europa League (EL) round-of-32 two seasons ago at the hands of Athletic Bilbao. If Marseille do advance to the quarter-finals, it will be a feat that they haven’t achieved in European competition since the 2011/12 season.
Hosts Bilbao will try to assert their away goal advantage in order to reverse the deficit. After a convincing 2-0 win over Leganés in La Liga, the Basque side will be full of confidence and will have their supporters cheering them on for a comeback.
As for Marseille, they are yet to register an away win in the EL (D3, L3). Since the group stage began, the Olympians have lost three, draw once and scored only one goal in four games. In addition, two of these four clashes have ended with a Marseille player sent-off.
Bilbao fans have reason to hope for a comeback, as they have won eight of their last ten home games in UEFA competition. Moreover, the ‘Leones’ have lost the first-leg away in 22 previous EL ties, before going on to make a second-leg comeback in more than half of them (13) – including seven of their last eight EL fixtures!
Players to watch: EL top scorer Aritz Aduriz raised expectations with his goal at the Vélodrome, and emotionally proclaiming afterwards: “…those who don’t believe in our comeback, better stay home.”
Argentinian Lucas Ocampos struck very early in the first-leg, just 44 seconds after the whistle, and will try to be as equally impactful at the San Mamés.
Stat attack: Any of Marseille’s six away results in Europe this season would be enough for them to win the tie.
Marseille have failed to win in any of their last seven away days in Europe and haven’t won’t on their last six visits to Spain.
Bilbao have netted at least once in five of their last six home games (all competitions).
