Match Preview
Excelsior carried on their exceptional away form in the previous round, whilst a ten-man Den Haag slumped at home to Breda. Now the Rotterdammers return to the Van Donge and De Roo Stadion, where they boast the worst home record in the league – just two wins out of 13 here all season.
Alfons Groenendijk’s dreams of European qualification with Den Haag may be all but lost after losing to two sides in the bottom four, consecutively.
Excelsior can leapfrog Den Haag with victory here and could even mount their own surprise top seven challenge if the momentum stays with them.
Although Excelsior boast the better recent form, these sides have been evenly matched across the season. They are separated by a single point and have an almost identical goal difference (+5/+6).
Mitchell Van der Gaag recently announced he will leave Excelsior come the end of the season, after assuring their Eredivisie status for one more year.
Under van der Gaag, Excelsior have become known as the giant killers of Holland, always the underdog but never without a surprise result every now and then. He has established them as a Eredivisie side heading into their fifth season in the top flight, their longest spell.
Players to watch: Mike van Duinen’s goals have proven to be the winner in three of Excelsior’s last four games, and has proven an invaluable asset in keeping them afloat.
Bjorn Johnsen (ADO) is the highest scorer in the league with no assists (ten goals) – the Norwegian prefers to get the job done himself but is without a goal in three starts.
Stat attack: Den Haag have failed to win any of their last six Eredivisie games (L3, D3), although Excelsior have won just one of their last seven league games at home (W1, D3, L3).
Of 13 Eredivisie encounters, Excelsior have won just twice (W2, D5, L6) – both teams scored in every one of those games.
