Match Preview

The Australian ‘Socceroos’ travel across the world for their very first friendly international in Norway. For Australia, this match is a perfect way to prepare for the travel fatigue that could affect their performance in Russia.
Norway, by contrast, have not qualified for the World Cup. However, they can still make Australia feel uncomfortable in the ice-cold surroundings of Oslo. Weather patterns from Siberia have caused temperatures in Northern Europe to plummet.
Lars Lagerbäck, the man who masterminded Iceland’s 2-1 Euro 2016 victory over England, has been in charge of Norway since 2017. With several ‘fresh faces’ in the squad, Largerbäck is building something new. Speaking ahead of the game, he said: “These games will be a test of sort, in June we aim to have a final squad ready for the Nations League”.
The teams have met two times before in the history of international football. Once in Sydney (1997) and once in London (2004), with Australia winning the first and drawing the last.
Twenty places separate the teams in the FIFA ranking, in which Australia recently dropped one spot to 37th, while Norway languish in 57th.
Players to watch: Norway striker Joshua King has scored four times in his last five international matches, and has looked lively for Bournemouth in the Premier League in recent weeks.
Understandably, Socceroos legend Tim Cahill is somewhat more sparingly used in the national side these days. Yet, he is in the squad and will be looking to build on his impressive 104 caps and 50 international goals, having also played well at club level since returning to Millwall.
Stat attack: All four of Norway’s last four international friendlies have produced under 2.5 goals.
By contrast, four out of Australia’s last five matches have seen over 2.5 goals scored.
