Match Preview

Now second-favourites behind Atletico Madrid to win the Europa League, Arsenal need to make good on the expectation surrounding them. They seem to have done the hard bit by eliminating AC Milan, but with a long journey to Moscow in the second-leg of this Europa League (EL) tie, Arsenal need to win comfortably here.
As it currently stands, the Gunners’ record against Russian clubs is: W2, D2, L2. CSKA Moscow have fared poorly in England of late, losing their last three matches on English soil, last winning in the 2014/15 Champions League (at Man City).
Arsenal have met CSKA twice before, in two group games during the 2006/07 Champions League (CL). The visitors’ first trip to the Emirates Stadium (in November 2006) ended in a 0-0 draw, with Arsenal having lost 1-0 in Moscow the previous month.
Although Arsenal’s two-legged win over AC Milan in the previous round is a true acid test of their cup credentials, CSKA’s own route here has been equally treacherous. They were reliant on away goals to progress (against Lyon) in the previous round, having won away on extremely hostile Serbian soil (against Red Star Belgrade) before that.
Arsene Wenger has hinted that star striker Alexandre Lacazette, who has recently returned from injury, may be used sparingly over the next few matches, stating: “He’s been out for two months, he worked hard but he still lacks a fraction maybe.”
Players to watch: Youngster Ainsley Maitland-Niles (ARS) thrived in the last round, despite being played out of position. He is poised to make another appearance at some stage during this tie.
With eight goals to his name this season, Vitinho is CSKA’s biggest goalscoring threat.
Stat attack: Both teams are coming into this match on the back of four consecutive wins.
Arsenal’s last European game on the date of this match was in 2006, when they drew 0-0 at Juventus en-route to that year’s CL final.
