Leipzig and Leverkusen are fourth and fifth respectively, making this one something of a Champions League playoff.
Perhaps mitigated by maiden European duties, the hosts have not quite been able to scale the heights they did in 2016/17. However, their home form has been a real asset this season, and with Leipzig beating Bayern Munich in their last outing at the Red Bull Arena, they go into this one with confidence.
Defeat for Leverkusen here would all but end the visitors’ interest in fourth place, but in terms of away form over the past five games, Leverkusen are the third-best team in the league. With Leverkusen having also won on every occasion (four) that they have led away at half time, Leipzig need to be fully focused to get a result.
In three matches against Leverkusen, Leipzig have won twice and drawn once. The reverse fixture ended in a scintillating 2-2 draw, and given that both teams have scored in six of Leipzig’s last eight games, this too could be a thrilling encounter.
Leipzig head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl has praised his side’s defensive discipline after a number of patchy performances at the back, saying: “For us it was important not to concede a goal, this is the first time we play in Europe. We saw the quality of this Marseille team.”
Players to watch: As usual, Timo Werner was the hero for Leipzig in midweek. Nevertheless, he needs to have an unbelievable run of form over the next month in order to match last season’s personal tally of 21 Bundesliga goals (11 this season).
On nine and ten goals respectively, Leon Bailey and Kevin Volland remain locked in a friendly battle to be Leverkusen’s top gun.
Stat attack: In addition to never beating Leipzig, Leverkusen have failed to keep a clean sheet against their opponents in three attempts.
Leipzig have scored first in six of their last eight games.
