The weekend’s Premier League (PL) action gets underway with Stoke City’s visit to Liverpool, and the visitors have a mountain to climb here.
Stoke are winless away from home since October 2017 (D5, L7) whilst Liverpool are yet to be beaten at home this season in the PL (W11, D6). Stoke must rely on wholesale changes from Jurgen Klopp (with Liverpool involved in midweek Champions League action) and play like never before.
An unlikely win here for Stoke would completely change their outlook. They would be within touching distance of relegation rivals Crystal Palace and Swansea, with games against both looming on the horizon.
No side has conceded the first goal more often than Stoke (21) this season, whilst only Manchester City have scored the first goal in a game more times than Liverpool (24) in this PL campaign.
It has been a record breaking season for Liverpool and Mohamed Salah – if he features here, one goal would make him the outright highest scoring player in one PL season. Moreover, he is just four goals off Ian Rush’s record of 47 goals in all competitions in a single season at Liverpool (43).
Players to watch: Liverpool’s front three have been lethal this term – in all competitions, Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino have all scored in the same game eight times.
Peter Crouch (STO) will hope to score against his former club here, having recently netted to secure a point against West Ham.
Stat attack: Liverpool have not lost at home to Stoke in the league in any of the last 54 occasions (W43, D11). This is the longest unbeaten home run against any team in top flight history.
Both teams have scored in four of Stoke’s last five games, as well as in four of the last five meetings between the pair.
Four of Liverpool’s last five games have featured over 2.5 goals (all competitions).
