Match Preview

Though Australia could have been drawn into a much worse World Cup (WC) group, the ‘Socceroos’ are still adapting to a new regime under Bert van Marrwijk, and will need to recover from what was a very disappointing duo of March friendlies.
With the likes of France and Denmark looming, a 4-1 defeat to Norway bodes poorly for the Aussies, although the 0-0 draw against Colombia was a sign of quickfire improvement.
Meanwhile the Czechs are recovering from disappointment in the China Cup which came on the back of failure to qualify for the WC, but they have won three of their last four matches including an encouraging 2-1 win against Euro 2016 surprise package Iceland.
Since this match is taking place on European soil, travel fatigue might be an issue for Australia, handing the Czech Rep an advantage from the off. Tellingly, Australia’s last victory over European opposition in Europe came back in August 2011, courtesy of a 2-1 win over Wales in Cardiff.
With a difference of only five places between them in the FIFA rankings as of May 2018 (AUS #40, CZE #45) there is little to separate them, but Australia could cut the gap on the top-ranked Asian (AFC) side Iran (#36) with a surprise win here.
Players to watch: With five goals in 18 appearances this calendar year (2018), Australian striker Tomi Juric is sure to be influential at some point.
For the Czechs, Michael Krmenčík is a versatile player that has filled attacking and midfield roles over the last few months, and has scored five goals in nine appearances this calendar year.
Stat attack: The two nations have met only once in the last 20 years, with the Czechs winning 3-1 in March 2000.
If Australia keep a clean sheet, it will be the nation’s first run of consecutive clean sheets since September 2016.
