Match Preview

Both teams come into this match on the back of defeats that served as a reality check for their respective aspirations.
After going 2-0 down against England at half-time in their last game, Group D team Nigeria rallied to halve the deficit, but it was too little, too late. That result extended Nigeria’s winless run to four games, and marked the first time since March 2016 that they have completed such a run. Prior to that defeat, Nigeria had also won two of their last three games (vs Argentina and Poland) on European soil.
Meanwhile, the Czech Republic suffered a harrowing 4-0 defeat to Australia, representing their second defeat in three matches, and their biggest in a significant number of years. The two teams have met only once before, in a 2-1 win for the Czech Rep. (in a Hassan II trophy match) back in December 1996.
With Nigeria facing another eastern European side in the form of Croatia for their opening WC game, their opposition here will provide a small insight into what awaits the Super Eagles (NGA).
Meanwhile, the Czechs are preparing for the inaugural UEFA Nations League, and as the lowest ranked seed in their group, this match could be crucial towards building the momentum necessary to avoid relegation to League C.
Players to watch: Alex Iwobi scored the consolation against England, representing his first international goal since his double blast against Argentina in November 2017.
Michael Krmenčík scored a hat-trick for his club Plzeň as recently as May 26, and also got on the scoresheet in his country’s 4-1 China Cup win over China.
Stat attack: In addition to being without a win in four, Nigeria are without a clean sheet in the same number of games.
The Czech Rep. are on a run of three games without a clean sheet.
Five out of the Czech Rep’s last seven games have produced over 2.5 goals.
