Two Russia World Cup (WC)-bound teams, Croatia and Senegal, do battle for supremacy in this friendly encounter at the Stadion Gradski vrt in Osijek as preparations for the finals of the WC intensify.
There is little time left before the two sides jet off for Russia, especially for the hosts as Senegal still have South Korea to contend with just before their WC adventure begins.
Croatia manager Zlatko Dalić will particularly be keen to rouse his team’s belief as ‘the Blazers’ (CRO) have lost two of their three build-up games this year, (W1, L2) losing to Peru and then Brazil last time out, both by 2-0 scorelines. Their sole win in between the losses was a decent 1-0 win over Mexico.
Senegal are unbeaten in each of their last three friendly games since earning WC qualification but have failed to win any of them. They drew 1-1 with Uzbekistan, and followed it up with two goalless stalemates against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Luxembourg.
Aliou Cissé’s (SEN) team are tough to break down and are very dangerous on the counter, so Croatia should have their work cut out here despite what the FIFA rankings say on paper.
Based on both team’s recent results, chances should be few and far between but the hosts will still fancy their chances of getting a win – four of their last five games at home have seen them record victories (W4, D1).
Players to watch: Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modrić is expected to bring his wealth of experience and passing excellence for Croatia.
The danger man for the ‘Lions of Teranga’ is unarguably Liverpool’s Sadio Mané who is coming off the back of a sensational season with the Reds.
Stat attack: This game will mark the first-ever meeting between these two countries.
Senegal are winless in their last three games in 2018 (D3).
Both teams have seen under 2.5 goals scored in their last three games.
Both teams have been drawing at half-time in three of their last four games overall.
