Match Preview

After failing to win any of their last four World Cup (WC) tune-up games, Senegal will look to gain a morale boosting victory ahead of travelling to Russia when they take on fellow WC participants South Korea at the Das Goldberg Stadion in Grodig, Austria.
Ranked 27th by FIFA going into the finals, the ‘Lions of Teranga’ recorded a treble of stalemates on the bounce and to make matters worse, Croatia inflicted a morale sapping 2-0 defeat on them three days ago.
Their opponents South Korea, who are ranked 57th in the world according to football’s governing body, are winless in their last two and have won just one of their last five friendlies since March (W1, D1, L3). A 2-0 win versus Honduras last month has been the only positive for the ‘Taeguk Warriors’.
It is just about that time when managers are putting the finishing touches to their WC starting XIs so how the two sides line up here could be particularly instructive.
Since 2001, the two nations have met thrice and each have a win to their name, with one stalemate played out.
Players to watch: South Korea should be particularly wary of Sadio Mané, who scored 20 goals last term for Liverpool. He has, however, failed to find the net for Senegal in his last five internationals.
Tottenham’s Son Heung-Min will be charged with unlocking the opposition defence. The 25-year-old South Korean was on the scoresheet in his country’s 2-0 win against Honduras, and hit 18 goals for his club last season.
Stat attack: There has been under 2.5 goals scored in each of the last three meetings between these two sides.
Senegal has been drawing at half-time in four of their last five matches.
South Korea have lost their last three games against African opposition.
