France have so far met all expectations, and finished top of WC qualifying Group A, ahead of Sweden and the Netherlands. After three straight friendly wins against Russia (3-1), Ireland (2-0) and Italy (3-1), Didier Deschamps’ side come into this one on the back of a surprising 1-1 draw against USA at the Stade de France.
Australia had a difficult WC qualification campaign, finishing third in AFC qualifying Group B, before defeating Syria and Honduras in the subsequent playoff ties. After a 4-1 friendly loss away to Norway, Bert van Marwijk’s men reacted well with a 0-0 home draw against Colombia, and two straight wins against the Czech Republic (4-0) and Hungary (2-1).
In four previous meetings with Australia in all competitions, France have a record that currently stands at: W2, D1, L1. The last time both teams met was back in October 2013, and Australia were trounced 6-0 by France in a friendly game which saw Olivier Giroud score two goals.
Players to watch: France’s best player in the 2018 WC qualifiers was Antoine Griezmann with four goals and four assists.
Australia’s current top scorer Tim Cahill has 50 international goals, representing the all-time record of the national team.
Stat attack: The French have lost only one of their last 12 matches in all competitions (W8, D3, L1), scoring at least two goals in nine of them.
