In the opening game of Group C, the 1998 World Cup (WC) winners France face Australia at the Kazan Arena. The French are expected to dominate Group C, whilst the Australians will be hoping for a positive result against one of the favourites to lift the cup.
France have so far met all expectations, and finished top of WC qualifying Group A, ahead of Sweden and the Netherlands. After three straight friendly wins against Russia (3-1), Ireland (2-0) and Italy (3-1), Didier Deschamps’ side come into this one on the back of a surprising 1-1 draw against USA at the Stade de France.
Australia had a difficult WC qualification campaign, finishing third in AFC qualifying Group B, before defeating Syria and Honduras in the subsequent playoff ties.
