Match Preview

It’s matchday two in Group C of the World Cup (WC) as Denmark and Australia go head to head at the Cosmos Arena in Samara.
Denmark were at times on the ropes against Peru in their first match, but came away with a 1-0 win. Coach Åge Hareide was happy with his team’s hard work, but also added that he thought they looked overwhelmed by the occasion, and at times even “afraid”.
Having started with a win, the Danes could take a huge step toward qualifying for the knockout-stages in this match. Should France beat Peru in the other match in Group C, a win here will send them through.
Australia fought valiantly against the French but in the end suffered a 2-1 defeat, courtesy of an 81st minute own goal. In a competition as brutal as the WC, the pressure is on to dig out a win for the popular Socceroos.
Australia had a difficult WC qualification campaign, and they had to go through play-off ties against Syria and Honduras to secure a place in the finals. Can the experience from those knock-out games help Australia here?
Players to watch: Christian Eriksen will carry much of Denmark’s hopes. Tottenham’s star playmaker has netted 22 goals in 79 caps, and has 12 goals and five assists in his last 14 international games!
Australia midfielder Mile Jedinak scored Australia’s goal against France, and has 19 international goals in 52 caps.
Stat attack: The teams have met three times since 2007, with Denmark winning two and Australia one.
All of Denmark’s last five games have ended under 2.5 goals, four of those under 1.5 while two have been goalless draws.
Both teams have scored in seven of Australia’s last ten games, and six of those ten have ended over 2.5 goals.
As a nation, Australia’s historical WC record stands at: W2, D3, L9.
