Match Preview

Australia (W2, D2, L1) need to beat eliminated Peru (W2, D1, L2) to stand any chance of not sharing their aeroplane home.
VAR awarded the ‘Socceroos’ (AUS) a penalty in their 1-1 draw with Denmark to keep their World Cup (WC) dreams alive following a 2-1 defeat to France in their opener. Australia coach Bert van Marwijk will hope that France beat Denmark to-nil, as ‘goals scored’ will see them through if they beat Peru 1-0 here (with France following suit 1-0).
With two straight 1-0 defeats in their opening games, Peru bow out in this game. Clocking up their tenth WC defeat (W4, D3, L10), Peru’s last WC win came in Argentina 1978. However, with a 15-game unbeaten run (in all competitions) prior to this WC stretching back to a 2-0 defeat to Brazil in 2016, Peru are more than capable of a win against a team who they’ve never met.
Before their loss to France, in all competitions, Peru last failed to claim ‘away’ points eight fixtures ago in a 2-1 qualifier defeat to Chile – can they register their first point at the WC finals since Spain 1982 or will Australia qualify for the round-of-16 for the second time in their history?
Key battles: Aston Villa’s Mile Jedinak has scored in each of Australia’s openers, taking his international goals to 20 in 78 caps. Goalkeeper Pedro Gallese will be the man trying to stop him. He has 39 clean sheets in 151 domestic appearances.
Stat attack: Australia are close to replicating their South Africa 2010 game-by-game form (L1, D1, W1) – they won their final game 2-1.
Since 1930, Peru have played in five +3.5 goal thrillers at games at WC finals, with 27 goals scored in total (W1, L4).
Australia will be wary of cautions – if France win 2-1 and Australia win 1-0, the group runner-up will be decided on Fairplay points (Denmark have one more card).
