Match Preview

Kicking off the Championship season, last season’s relegation scrappers Reading, face a tricky opener against last season’s promotion-chasing Derby.
2017/18 will be a season to forget for the ‘Royals’ following an end-of-season relegation fight. Manager Paul Clement eventually guided them to a 20th-place finish, drawing 0-0 away to Championship runners-up Cardiff City in their final game.
After a sixth-place finish, Derby County snuck into the 2017/’18 play-offs, only to lose 2-1 on aggregate to now-promoted Fulham. Chelsea legend Frank Lampard takes the helm in his first managerial appointment and will be determined to get the ‘Rams’ off to winning ways.
With pre-season matches providing a glimpse into the teams’ preparations, Reading (D3, L3) fared less favourably than Derby (W4, L1). With a 4-0 home loss to Crystal Palace in their last warm-up game, Reading’s minus-seven goal difference contrasts to Derby’s plus six.
Reading lead the way in the head-to-head record and have 23 wins over Derby’s 12 (with nine draws) – their last meeting resulted in a 3-3 thriller at the Madejski Stadium with a red card for Derby’s Chris Baird.
Players to watch: New signing Mark McNulty scored 25 League Two goals last season. Will he get on the teamsheet and make the step up?
Meanwhile, last season’s Championship Golden Boot winner Matěj Vydra’s 21 goals piqued Leeds United’s interest – will he stay and pick up where he left off here?
Stat attack: Three of their last five meetings have seen goals in both halves with both teams scoring in all five games and 21 goals scored in total.
In 18 competitive fixtures since late-January, Reading have only won three fixtures (W3, D6, L9).
In their last five season openers, both teams have earned the same points – Reading: W2, D1, L2/Derby: W1, D4.
