Tony Pulis’ Middlesbrough welcome Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United to the Riverside for the Teeside club’s first home game of the season. Both sides were involved in exciting affairs on the opening day.
While Middlesbrough gained a last-gasp draw at Millwall, Sheffield United lost at home to newly-relegated Swansea. Pulis did not hold back his criticisms of Boro, stating: “That group is not good enough to win us promotion, we need to add to the group”.
Wilder’s men do not have the best of returns from trips to the North East. This fixture was also Sheffield United’s first away game last season, with ‘the Boro’ winning 1-0. The visitors may, however, take confidence from a good run of away friendly games in pre-season (W5, D1).
Middlesbrough have fared very well in home openers over the last few years. Victory here would mark the fourth time in succession that a Boro side has won its first home league game of a Championship season.
Players to watch: After a summer of transfer speculation, Middlesbrough man Martin Braithwaite silenced his doubters after poking home his first goal for Boro on the opening day.
With 19 goals, veteran Blades striker Leon Clarke had his best-ever goal scoring season in 2017/18. He will be looking to get himself off the mark here, after recording just one shot against Swansea.
Stat attack: When played at the Riverside, this fixture has seen under 2.5 goals scored on each of the last four occasions.
Middlesbrough have not lost to Sheffield United at home since October 1997.
In 2017/18, Sheffield United away games averaged the highest amount of goals in the Championship (2.8 per game in total).
Boro have kept a clean sheet in each of the Blades’ last four visits to Teesside.
