Match Preview

Cardiff welcomes back Premier League (PL) football to the city after a four-year absence, as Cardiff City play host to Newcastle for their first home match of the season. Both teams are expected to have a difficult year, and after losing their respective opening matches this is already an important match.
Cardiff had a quiet summer, and will rely on the same players that secured promotion by finishing second in last season’s Championship. They were, however, outplayed by Bournemouth in their first match (2-0 defeat) and must step up their game to survive at this level.
Solid home performances were the foundation of Cardiff’s promotion last season (W16, D4, L3). They kept a clean sheet on 11 occasions, and no team in the Championship conceded as few goals at home as they did (16 in total; 0.7 on average per game).
Newcastle finished tenth last season, but their opening 2-1 defeat to Tottenham means they have now lost five of their last six PL matches. Away from home they won just four games last season, but were no pushovers – seven of their eleven defeats were by a one goal margin.
In six league H2Hs in the last decade, Newcastle have won all six.
Players to watch: Cardiff’s £11 million signing Josh Murphy had a decent pre-season, but now needs to deliver on the big stage. Joselu had an underwhelming first season for Newcastle (four goals in 30 PL games) but led the line and found the net against Tottenham.
Stat attack: Five of the last seven H2H competitive matches (in all competitions) have produced over 2.5 goals.
In 12 of Cardiff’s 16 home victories last season they were ahead at half-time.
Newcastle were among the PL ‘good boys’ in 2017/18 with an average of 1.37 yellow cards per match. Cardiff averaged just 1.29 when they were last in the PL (2013/14) – a league low that season.
