Match Preview

Just five days after lifting the season’s first piece of European silverware, Atlético Madrid make the trip to the Mestalla to play Valencia in the standout fixture from the opening weekend of the 2018/19 La Liga (LL) season.
Marcelino García Toral’s first campaign in charge of Valencia saw Los Ches guarantee themselves a spot in the Champions League group stages by finishing fourth on 73 points, 27 more than in 2016/17. Valencia, who will be celebrating their 100th anniversary in March 2019, have signed some top players – Denis Cheryshev, Michy Batshuayi and Kevin Gameiro, to name just a few – that can make them serious LL title contenders.
Diego Simeone’s Atlético travel to Valencia on the back of a morale-boosting 4-2 success against neighbours Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup – their seventh title under Simeone. No LL side have spent more than Atletico in the summer transfer window so far, bringing in a number of new faces such as Rodrigo Hernández, Thomas Lemar and Gelson Martins. There can be no doubt whatsoever that Atlético are more ready than ever to challenge for the LL crown.
Atlético are unbeaten in their last three LL visits (W2, D1) to the Mestalla. Last season’s clash ended goalless.
Players to watch: Forward Rodrigo Moreno’s 16 league goals earned Valencia 16 points last term.
Antoine Griezmann was directly involved in 28 of Atlético’s 58 LL goals last season. He has signed a one-year contract extension to stay at the club until 2023.
Stat attack: Valencia have failed to score in their past four league encounters with Atlético, conceding six goals.
Atlético conceded just 0.73 goals per game away from home in LL last season.
None of the last 15 meetings between these two sides in all competitions have seen over 4.5 goals.
Valencia have won six of the last ten opening day games.
