Japan will put their all-time undefeated record against Chile on the line this Friday at the Sapporo Dome, as both teams prepare for their upcoming short-term challenges.
The Blue Samurais are coming off a decent campaign during the 2018 World Cup (WC), where they escaped out of a tough Group H and gave Belgium a serious scare in the last 16. However, they fell short and lost 2-3 thanks to a stoppage-time goal.
However, it is worth noting that Japan won their opening game against Colombia, but couldn’t win afterwards. They drew against Senegal, and lost to both Poland and Belgium. Three of those four games saw over 2.5 goals scored.
Chile, on the other hand, did not qualify for the 2018 WC and have been playing several friendly matches under the guidance of new manager Reinaldo Rueda. The Colombian tactician has a record of: W2, D2, L1, in his first five games with ‘La Roja’. Three of those five games have had over 2.5 goals scored.
Players to watch: Takashi Inui got one goal and two assists for Japan during their 2018 WC campaign.
Guillermo Maripan is part of the new wave of Chilean players trying to make their way into Rueda’s squad. The towering Alaves centre-back has scored twice in his past three games for his country.
Stat attack: These two sides have played three times, with two wins for The Blue Samurais and one draw.
Japan have scored more than one goal in only one of their last five friendly matches.
Meanwhile, Chile have scored in four of their last five, notching 2+ goals on three occasions over that span.
Chile have a record of: W2, D2, L1, in their last five away friendly matches.
