A last-gasp injury-time goal ensured Ukraine kicked-off their UEFA Nations League (UNL) League B, Group 2 campaign in style with a 2-1 away win to the Czech Republic. A win here would see Ukraine as strong favourites for promotion to League A.
The win over the Czechs was their sixth straight game unbeaten (W4, D2 – five friendlies) since an unsuccessful World Cup qualifying campaign. If Ukraine avoid defeat here, it would be the nation’s longest unbeaten run since November 2012 – November 2013 when they went 12 unbeaten.
Slovakia’s preparation for their first ever UNL game turned out to be a facile 3-0 success against a Denmark side filled with lower league and futsal players due to a player and national association dispute over image rights.
The history books will nevertheless record it as Slovakia’s fourth win in six games (W4, D1, L1) and the 12th game out of the last 13 that they have scored in. Away from home however, the team are on a run of three straight defeats (excluding neutral venues).
That said, Slovakia’s record away to Ukraine is even with a win, draw and a loss. The only two tournament meetings (both in September) ended in a 1-0 away win for Slovakia and a 0-0 draw. Overall, the teams have met on six occasions with Ukraine holding a slight advantage (W2, D3, L1).
Players to watch: Evgen Konoplyanka is in good form for Ukraine with three goals in his last two games, while Marek Hamšík is always central to Slovakia’s chances.
Stat attack: Since 2013, Ukraine have only conceded three goals once in 43 games and they won that game 4-3!
Five of Slovakia’s last six away games have seen both sides score as have five of Ukraine’s last six overall.
Ukraine have been behind at half-time only once in their last 14 home games.
