Match Preview

After failing to beat any of their last five European opponents in all competitions, four-time World Cup (WC) winners Italy need a massive boost. They face the reigning European champions, in their second UEFA Nations League (UNL) League A group match.
A Portugal side without talisman Ronaldo was made to settle for a 1-1 draw with Croatia in their latest round of friendlies. The Euro 2016 winners remain winless in their last three (D2, L1) since beating Morocco in the group stages of their 2018 WC campaign. The last time they went four games without a victory was back in 2012/13!
Jorginho’s late goal against Poland, in Italy’s UNL group opener, spared Roberto Mancini and his team the ignominy of a second defeat in three games. Mancini was quick to back his team post-match, stating: “It was the first big game so there were some mistakes but overall the lads did well.”
The Azurri have not tasted victory in seven of their last eight games in all competitions (D4, L3, W1). However, in terms of the H2H record between these sides, history is on Italy’s side. Italian national sides have won six of their last seven matches against their Portuguese counterparts.
Players to watch: In his last game for Portugal, stand-in skipper Pepe marked his 100th cap with a goal against the Croats.
Jorginho is expected to keep pulling the strings from deep for his side after being the hero in his last international appearance.
Stat attack: Each of Italy’s last five games have seen both teams score.
Currently ranked #7 by FIFA, Portugal have not recorded any win over European opponents this calendar year.
Overall, there have been under 2.5 goals scored in nine of Italy’s last eleven games.
