A Wolves side finding their stride in the Premier League (PL) welcome a struggling Burnley to Molineux. The usually solid visitors have experienced the ‘European hangover’ in recent weeks, but won’t have to worry about that anymore as they were ousted from continental competition before the international break.
Nuno Espírito Santo’s Wolves are already showing signs of the side they were last season, when they scored the most goals, conceded the joint-least, and finished nine points ahead of their closest competition in last season’s Championship.
The PL new boys finally got their first win in the last round after four games (W1, D2, L1), and have now lost just three games in their last 16 league outings (Championship and PL). At home they are unbeaten in 11 matches (W6, D5).
Burnley did not cope well juggling European qualifiers alongside PL duties. Winless in four (D1, L3), the team have already conceded nine goals. That 2.25 per match ratio so far is markedly higher than last season’s 1.03 (39 in total).
Now without a win in nine PL matches (D3, L6), Burnley might find hope in their strong performances on the road last season, where they secured more points away (28) than at home (26).
Players to watch: Benfica loanee Raúl Jiménez (Wolves) has scored one goal so far, while remarkably, defender James Tarkowski has scored two of Burnley’s three goals.
Stat attack: Wolves lost only two of 23 Championship home fixtures last season (W16, D5, L2), scoring an average of two goals per game.
In 46 Championship games last season, Wolves were behind at half-time just four times.
In 2017/18, Burnley scored 69% of their goals in the second-half.
Just 37% of Burnley’s PL matches produced over 2.5 goals last season – their matches had the lowest goal average of all (2.0).
