Match Preview

With the Champions League 2018/19 (CL) in full swing, inconsistent Russian outfit Lokomotiv Moscow host a Schalke side who’ve just broken a five-game domestic losing streak (W1, L5).
A dramatic game with Galatasaray in their first group game resulted in a 3-0 away loss with Lokomotiv conceding three from open play. Last season, they progressed to the 1/8-finals of the Europa League (EL), bowing out to Atletico Madrid 8-1 on aggregate.
Form in the Russian Premier league has been erratic and Lokomotiv find themselves in sixth with a symmetrical record of: W3, D3, L3, GF10, GA10.
Meanwhile, Schalke drew 1-1 with Porto in their first game after goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann saved a 13th-minute penalty. Off form domestically and sitting second-from-bottom, last year’s Europa League semi-finalists are showing signs of improvement but are experiencing a second slow start in as many Bundesliga seasons.
With no H2H meetings in their history, Schalke have the advantage of European experience with 98 wins from 195 European fixtures (D46, L51) while Lokomotiv have 46 wins (D24, L43).
Players to watchManuel Fernandes (LOK) has two domestic goals so far, but scored six EL goals last season – including a hat-trick in a 3-2 meeting with Nice in February 2018.
Schalke’s 21-year-old Swiss striker Breel Embolo scored in the draw with Porto – as well as claiming a recent domestic goal and assist.
Stat attack: Lokomotiv are making their first appearance in the Champions League since 2004/05.
In their last respective CL meetings, Lokomotiv saw three yellow cards whilst Schalke saw two.
Their last three CL campaigns have seen Schalke drop-out at the last-16 stage.
Both teams have scored in three of Lokomotiv’s last five games – Schalke meanwhile have seen two games in that time end the same (in all competitions).
