After beating Lithuania in midweek, Romania will go top of the UNL group with just two games to play if they win here. However, Romania have taken just five points out of the last possible nine from competitive matches against teams currently (as of October 2018) ranked lower than themselves.
That noted, Romania are unbeaten in such matches since a 1-0 reverse to Albania at Euro 2016. They owe much of this sequence to the fact that they have conceded more than one goal just once in their last 12 competitive matches at home.
Overall, Serbia’s form on foreign soil is quite impressive, with three clean sheets (and wins to nil) in three of their last five games. However, their record over the past year against teams (like Romania) ranked above them is poor, standing at: W0, D1, L4 (GF 5, GA 10).
Serbia have scored first in five of their last six games (including friendlies). On the last three competitive occasions, they have also taken a lead into half-time, but have dropped five points from the maximum possible nine after the break.
Players to watch: Aleksandar Mitrović (SER) was at the double in the reverse fixture, twice giving Serbia the lead. However, Nicolae Stanciu (ROM) was responsible for both equalisers, scoring the first and assisting the second.
Stat attack: The Romanians have managed to keep a first-half clean sheet in ten of their last 12 competitive home matches.
On the flipside, they have led at half-time just once in the last eight of those games.
Serbia are unbeaten in three matches against Romania, and have scored on each occasion.
The visitors have also conceded 2+ goals in four of their last five matches against higher-ranked opposition.
