Match Preview

Dortmund’s 0-0 midweek draw with Club Brugge secured progression into the Champions League (CL) knockout stages, but was also only the second time a team had recorded more than 1000 passes in a single CL game since data collection started in 2004/05. That’ll be no surprise for Bundesliga fans though, Dortmund hold both the second-highest successful pass rate (87%), and the second-highest average possession (55.6%), in the division.
Unbeaten in the league after 12 games (W9, D3) – a new club record – and formidable at home (W5, D1), four of Dortmund’s five home victories have, however, seen both teams score. Still, the Bundesliga’s first-placed club have averaged 3.83 team goals per home match.
Getting a positive result here will be a hard task for Freiburg, although a 1-1 draw at Bayern in their last away outing shows an ability to ruffle the top teams’ feathers. However with just one away win so far (W1, D2, L2), and not a single clean sheet on the road, traveling fans will probably journey here more in hope than expectation.
Freiburg have, however, scored in every away league match, albeit they’ve hit the net just once in all bar one.
Players to watch: Dortmund super-sub Paco Alcácer has averaged a goal every 26.3 minutes. Eight of his nine goals have come from the bench, and he’s one shy of equalling the Bundesliga record for goals scored by a substitute in a single season. That record is jointly-held by Nils Peterson, who has two league goals for Freiburg so far.
Stat attack: A staggering 34% of Dortmund’s Bundesliga goals (12/35) were netted in the final 15 minutes.
Freiburg have scored in four of the last five H2Hs held here (D1, L4), although the aggregate scoreline is 18-5.
Dortmund have scored six goals from counter-attacks this season – the Bundesliga’s highest tally.
