Fifth place and US$1.5m are the spoils for the winner of this FIFA Club World Cup (CWC) clash between Tunisia’s Espérance Sportive de Tunis and Mexico’s CD Guadalajara. Albeit inconsequential for the tournament as a whole, the US$500,000 difference in earnings makes this an all-important game for both clubs.
The Tunisian outfit saw an unbeaten run of eight competitive matches (W7, D1) stopped with a 3-0 loss at the hands of host nation club Al Ain in the last round – only the second time this season (alongside the first-leg of the CAF Champions League final) that they have conceded three goals in a game.
Tunis reached the fifth-place playoff in their last CWC appearance in 2011, losing to another Mexican club, CF Monterrey, after conceding three goals between the 40th and 48th minute. Up until this clash, that was their only other meeting with a Mexican team.
Guadalajara were sent to the fifth-place play-off after giving up the lead – and three second-half goals – at the hands of Asian champions Kashima Antlers in the quarter-finals.
The Mexicans usually start games positively, opening the scoring in six of their last eight fixtures including their loss to Kashima. Despite a disastrous Apertura in which they finished 11th, remaining unbeaten in their last eight away games of the Liga MX season (W4, D4) bodes well.
Players to watch: Taha Yassive Khenissi (Tunis) has found the back of the net in three of his last five league matches, while Ángel Zaldivar (Guadalajara) has scored in three of his last five club starts – all were the match opener.
Stat attack: Tunis have maintained clean sheets in seven of their last ten competitive fixtures.
Both teams have scored in 11 of Guadalajara’s last 13 competitive fixtures.
Of the last 18 goals Guadalajara have conceded, 11 have come after half-time.
