Match Preview

Southampton continue to lament their worst start to a Premier League (PL) season this decade despite consecutive wins, but are in good form to continue their recent revival having now scored in all but one of their last eight PL matches.
With 40% of relegated clubs since 1995/96 sitting outside the bottom three at Christmas, complacency is not an option for Southampton as they return home after defeating Huddersfield 3-1 at the weekend.
The ‘Saints’ finally found their first home win of the season with a miraculous late victory (3-2) over Arsenal in their last outing at St Mary’s, eventually converting one of their three half-time leads at home (W3, D4, L1) into victory.
However, they must turn around their overall sluggish second half performances this season, with the hosts bringing a second half home goal difference of -5 into this contest – the league’s joint-third worst ahead of the round.
Conversely, West Ham have a second half goal difference of just -1 on the road (the equal-ninth best in the league), and have lost just one second half in their last six trips (W3, D2, L1).
The ‘Hammers’ have won just one of their last eight visits to Southampton (W1, D4, L3), that was in February 2017. The last four PL meetings have all produced over 2.5 total goals, with both teams scoring in two of those games.
Players to watch: Danny Ings (SOU) continues to score, with four goals in his last four matches, while Felipe Anderson (WHM) has five in his last eight appearances.
Stat attack: All but one of Southampton’s last six PL matches have produced over 3.5 total goals.
West Ham have scored in seven of their last nine PL fixtures.
West Ham have a goal difference of -6 in the 76th-90th minute period – the third-worst in the league.
