Match Preview

Two victories from their last two group stage games hauled BATE into the Europa League (EL) knockout stages as they finished second behind Chelsea in Group L (W3, L3). Yet despite being domestic champions for 13 consecutive seasons, the Belarusians have never progressed past this stage of the tournament, but did end a run of five straight European home games without a win as they beat Hungarians MOL Vidi in their final group stage home fixture.
However, with the Belarusian top flight wrapping up in December along with the EL group stage, BATE haven’t played a competitive match since the middle of that month, which could be advantageous to opponents Arsenal.
The ‘Gunners’ made light work of their EL group, finishing unbeaten and in first place (W5, D1). The London outfit didn’t concede a single goal on the road during the group stage (W3), a stark contrast to their Premier League (PL) form where they remain the only club in the division yet to register an away clean sheet this season.
In fact, a clean sheet here would be Arsenal’s sixth consecutive in the competition and would set a new tournament record. Yet with just two wins in their last eight away matches (W2, D2, L4 – in all competitions), setting that record is certainly not guaranteed.
Players to watchMaksim Skavysh was BATE’s top league scorer (11 goals) and netted in their last EL game. Meanwhile, Alexandre Lacazette has now scored in Arsenal’s last four PL victories.
Stat attack: Both teams have scored in just one of BATE’s last five EL home matches.
Arsenal’s last six EL away victories have been ‘to nil.’
These two met in last season’s EL group stage with Arsenal dispatching BATE at home (6-0) and away (4-2).
Arsenal scored three first-half goals in each of those H2Hs, with the opener coming before the 15th minute.
