Match Preview

In last week’s first-leg clash, two second-half strikes from Viktoria Plzeň defender Luděk Pernica condemned Dinamo Zagreb to a 2-1 defeat. However, with an all-important away goal to take into this second leg in Croatia, Zagreb will know this tie remains wide open, as they look to extend their unbeaten Europa League (EL) record at home to seven games (W4, D2).
An undefeated group stage campaign got the Croatian champions to this stage (W4, D2), while just one defeat in 19 competitive home fixtures this season (W15, D3, L1) will certainly inspire confidence.
However, Zagreb have won just seven of the 20 two-legged UEFA ties where they lost an away first leg, losing the last five in a row. That doesn’t bode well considering Plzeň have progressed the four previous times they’ve won a first-leg home game in a UEFA knockout tie.
Unbeaten away from home in five matches (W3, D2), Plzeň are no pushovers on the road. They have, however, found themselves trailing at half-time in all three European away games they’ve played this season (W1, L2) – though all were Champions League fixtures – netting their total three away goals during the second half.
Players to watch: Zagreb are boosted by the return of Izet Hajrović to the side following suspension. He has six goals in Europe this term, four of which have arrived before half-time.
Plzeň’s new signing Jean-David Beauguel failed to score in the first leg, but has netted in each game either side of that match.
Stat attack: Nine of Zagreb’s 15 home victories this season (60%) have been accompanied by a clean sheet.
Plzeň have won just two of the seven previous EL knockout away matches they’ve played (W2, D2, L3).
Plzeň have scored in eight consecutive away games (in all competitions).
