Match Preview

Sunday’s Eredivisie action opens with somewhat of a dead-rubber affair between rock-bottom Breda and mid-table Venlo. Still without a win since the winter break (D2, L7) Breda are eight points from the relegation play-offs with just eight matches remaining, whilst Venlo are seven points from both the bottom three and the top seven ahead of this round.
Not only are Breda without a win in 2019, they have the worst overall attacking record this Eredivisie season (0.88 goals on average per match) as well as the worst defensive record (2.38 conceded).
Breda and Venlo were both promoted together in 2017/18, although it is Venlo who are the happier of the pair now. However, the visitors have avoided defeat in only five (38.46%) of their away league matches this season, although two of those times came against sides making up the bottom three ahead of this round (W1, D1).
Venlo boss Maurice Steijn knows his adversaries very well. The ex-Breda player has an overall record of: W9, D2, L4, against his former club as a manager and is unbeaten in seven of his last eight such matches (W5, D2, L1), masterminding six clean sheets during that period.
Players to watch: Gervane Kastaneer has scored Breda’s only goal in 360 minutes of Eredivisie football at home in 2019. Meanwhile, Venlo’s number nine Ralf Seuntjens has been involved in each of his side’s last two league goals at Breda.
Stat attack: Breda have failed to score in seven of their nine matches this calendar year (0.22 goals on average per match in 2019).
New manager effect? Ruud Brood is unbeaten in six of his last seven managerial encounters against Steijn (W4, D2, L1) ahead of his first game in charge of Breda.
Venlo have lost at both HT/FT in six of their last seven away Eredivisie matches.
