After defeat to PSV over the weekend, Den Haag’s longest unbeaten streak of the league campaign came crashing down (W2, D2). However, the ‘Storks’ have scored ten goals across their last three home games, and should be confident of returning to winning ways against an Excelsior side that looks destined for the relegation playoffs.
Prior to that visit to Eindhoven, Den Haag had netted eight goals across two Eredivisie rounds for the first time since January 2011. However, they often struggle to hold on for the duration of the match – of the nine goals that have put Den Haag in the lead at home, they have gone on to concede an equaliser on four occasions.
It seemed unrealistic that Excelsior coach Ricardo Moniz would make any immediate impact after taking the helm earlier this month. He faced a baptism of fire in his opening match (6-2 vs Ajax) but did earn a respectable point vs top-half Willem II last time out, ending a run of seven straight defeats for the Rotterdam club.
The visitors have picked up just 29.63% of their paltry points total away from home and only three sides have scored fewer away goals (0.86 per match average). Notably, the lion’s share of Excelsior’s conceded league goals (65.71%) have come after the break.
Players to watch: Super-sub Tomáš Necid has scored from the bench in two of Den Haag’s last three matches. Meanwhile, Mounir El Hamdaoui scored his third goal in four appearances last weekend, earning Excelsior their first league point since February.
Stat attack: Only three Eredivisie sides have been shown more yellow cards than Den Haag (55 – 1.77 per match average).
Alfons Groenendijk has won three of his last four H2Hs against Excelsior with both teams scoring (W3, L1).
Excelsior have failed to score in four of their last five Eredivisie away matches.
