Match Preview

Azerbaijan recently suffered their fourth consecutive loss in Group E of the European Championship Qualifiers (ECQ), extending their winless run in ECQs to nine matches (D3, L6). Entertainment remains a constant factor though, as six of Azerbaijan’s last seven ECQs have produced goals at both ends and over 2.5 match goals.
Although Azerbaijan have lost six of their last eight home ECQs (W1, D1, L6 – including the last three) they haven’t lost four home ECQs in a row since 2007. Sticking with the theme of goals, seven of Azerbaijan’s last ten home ECQs have seen goals at both ends.
World Cup finalists Croatia joined leaders Hungary at the top with a 4-0 thumping of Slovakia (W3, L1). However, that was just their second win on the road in six ECQ away fixtures (W2, D2, L2). Furthermore, Croatia haven’t won consecutive away ECQs in a single qualification campaign since 2010.
That, however, shouldn’t cloud Croatia’s overall ECQ form home and away, with just two losses since October 2011 (W11, D4, L2). However, recent form has seen Croatia alternate between wins and losses in their last seven matches including friendlies (W4, L3), with their last streak of consecutive wins coming in November 2018.
Players to watch: Two of Mahir Emreli’s three international goals for Azerbaijan have come after the hour mark, while Croatia haven’t lost an ECQ fixture whenever Ivan Perišić has scored any of his eight goals (W6, D1), a majority (five) of which have come after the break.
Stat attack: Six of Azerbaijan’s last nine goals in their previous ten ECQs have come after the half-hour mark.
Eight of Azerbaijan’s last ten ECQs produced the same result at both half-time and full-time.
Six of the nine goals scored in three H2Hs have come before the break.
Five of Croatia’s last six ECQ wins have seen them lead at half-time.
