England’s 4-0 victory over Bulgaria was their third UEFA European qualifying campaign (ECQ) win in a row where they have netted four or more goals, with the ‘Three Lions’ leading at half-time in all three. Dominant at home, England have now won their last eight ECQ home fixtures, winning seven ‘to nil’.
Unbeaten in ECQ qualifying since November 2007 (W18, D3), Gareth Southgate’s men should hold no fear facing Kosovo (FIFA ranking #120) considering they’ve recorded an aggregate scoreline of 21-0 across their last six matches against nations currently ranked 100 or worse (3.5 goals on average per fixture).
Having said that, Kosovo aren’t playing like a normal low-ranked nation. The visitors journey here after an impressive 2-1 win over the Czech Republic that made it 15 consecutive games unbeaten (W10, D5). What makes that run even more remarkable is that Kosovo have remained unbeaten despite both teams scoring in their last five games, with all five fixtures coming against teams ranked higher than them.
A second-half winner got Kosovo all three points in that Czech victory, and fans won’t be surprised if they score late on here – the visitors have scored six of their last nine competitive away goals after the 60th minute.
Players to watch: Harry Kane hit a hat-trick against Bulgaria, with two coming from the penalty spot. Only one player has scored more penalties for England than Kane’s seven (excluding shoot-outs).
Vedat Muriqi has scored in Kosovo’s last two ECQ games – his nation have won every game that he’s scored in (W6).
Stat attack: England’s last four ECQ fixtures saw the opener scored within 25 minutes.
Since the turn of the century, England have recorded 16 ECQ home victories, with 14 being won by at least a -1 handicap.
There’s been an average of 10.75 corners per match across Kosovo’s ECQ fixtures so far.
