Match Preview

The two least fancied sides in Champions League (CL) Group A go head-to-head as Club Brugge attempt to progress from the group stage for the first time in their history, against a Galatasaray side that’s failed in each of their last three CL campaigns. These two have met before, with Club Brugge winning 3-1 in the only previous H2H held here, back in the 2002/03 CL group stage.
Brugge have lost just two of their seven prior European clashes vs Turkish opposition (W3, D2, L2) with both defeats coming away from home. Notably, both teams scored in all three of their UEFA-sanctioned home games vs Turkish opposition (W2, D1) and the Belgians led at half-time in two.
Now in his fourth stint as Galatasaray boss, Fatih Terim’s recent CL record leaves much to be desired. Terim sides are winless in six of the last seven CL matches (W1, D1, L5), failing to score in four of the previous five such games.
Galatasaray are winless in all six previous UEFA-sanctioned games vs Belgian opposition (D2, L4 – 4:16 aggregate score). Moreover, the visitors have not won a European game on foreign soil since 2012/13 and boast a shocking record of D3, L14 since.
Players to watch: Brugge wouldn’t be here if not for Hans Vanaken – he scored in three of their four CL qualifiers, all three of which were won by a single-goal margin.
Galatasaray’s flying Dutchman, Ryan Babel, has scored four goals in his last five outings for club and country, three of which arrived after half-time.
Stat attack: Brugge have won three of their previous 18 CL matches (excluding qualifiers – W3, D4, L11).
Galatasaray have failed to score in each of their last four CL away fixtures (L4).
Galatasaray have been losing at both HT/FT in their last three CL matches, conceding at least twice in each.
