FC Emmen – Groningen Prediction and PREVIEW

  • During this twelfth round of the Eredivisie, FC Emmen will play a much welcome home game at De Oude Meerdijk, which should present an opportunity to begin climbing out of the relegation zone. All six of their competition points have been picked up at home so far (W1, D3, L1) to go alongside six consecutive away defeats. In the KNVB Cup, Emmen avoided disgrace by defeating amateurs ADO 20 in extra time.
  • As previously mentioned, things have been a little easier within the comforts of home, particularly earlier in the season when they collected points hosting RKC Waalwijk (D 1-1) and FC Utrecht (W 3-2). A 3-0 defeat against the in-form AZ was the only home loss so far. Manager Dick Lukkien’s team picked up the pieces with two draws against SC Heerenveen (0-0) and FC Volendam (1-1) in between their joyless travelling period. The latter is the only club to have started the round below Emmen in the standings, so it must be considered a missed opportunity.
  • Opponent FC Groningen is coming out of a very difficult phase of their season and used their KNVB Cup game against FC Dordrecht to regain confidence. The 3-0 victory turned out to be the prelude to a whirlwind performance against PSV. At their home of Euroborg last weekend, it was a resounding surprise that FC Groningen claimed another 3-0 lead and then went on to win 4-2.
  • Frank Wormuth’s team is now out of the relegation zone and can now press onwards and upwards in pursuit of a mid-table position, with the top half just three points away at the beginning of the round. With three games before the World Cup break, the men in green and white will be eager to enter that break with a decent buffer. After consecutive league defeats at Sparta (1-2) and Twente (0-3), Groningen will consider themselves due for success in unfamiliar territory.

  • Players to watch: FC Emmen midfielder Mark Diemers is in his first season with the red and white. He scored his first goal for his new club in the previous round of matches and has also provided one assist in ten league matches. On the FC Groningen side, captain Joey Pelupessy cannot go unmentioned. As a substitute, he scored his first league goal for FC Groningen against PSV.
  • Hot stat: The previous match between Emmen and Groningen ended 0-4. At FC Groningen, Paulos Abraham scored one of his two goals in Groningen colours. Of the 22 starters in that game, four currently play at FC Groningen: Damil Dankerlui, Ramon Lundqvist, Mike te Wierik and Michael Verrips (then Emmen).
