Feyenoord – Lazio Prediction Prediction and PREVIEW

  • The most hotly contested group in the UEFA Europa League (UEL) comes to a close as Feyenoord welcome Lazio amid a myriad of permutations as to how Group F could end. As far as these two are concerned, Feyenoord must win to stay in contention but could end up relying on Midtjylland to do them a favour, whilst Lazio simply need to avoid defeat to qualify.
  • Feyenoord had the luxury of a weekend off from league action to allow more time to prepare for this crunch clash, which could be just as well as they look to improve on their run of just two wins and one clean sheet across the last eight games (W2, D4, L2). Arne Slot’s men have had a rather torrid time against Italian opponents of late too, with their Europa Conference League final defeat to Lazio’s bitter rivals Roma last season compounded by a 4-2 defeat in the reverse Group F fixture.
  • Simply avoiding defeat here will be enough to see Lazio through to the knockout phase, yet only a victory guarantees a ticket directly to the round of 16. However, Maurizio Sarri’s men face a crucial week after a 3-1 defeat to Salernitana weakened their grip on their Serie A top-four position, with Sarri evidently fuming in the aftermath when he said: “if I say what I really think, they’ll ban me for six months”!
  • Things don’t get any easier for Lazio with a Rome derby directly following this game, but an improvement in their form away to Dutch opponents will set them up nicely for that (W1, D1, L1). They may need a hatful of goals to do just that with Lazio being the only UEL group leaders to concede ten times, so the visit of the group’s strongest attacking side could be a recipe for excitement.
  • Key battle: Former Fiorentina centre-back Dávid Hancko has scored a first-half goal in both of Feyenoord’s UEL home games this term, yet his main aim will be to stop the likes of Sergej Milinković-Savić (G5, A7) creating for Lazio. The Serbian international will be keen to stamp his authority on this game especially as he will miss the Derby della Capitale this weekend through suspension following a run of four bookings from his last five appearances!
  • Hot stat: Lazio have failed to win nine of their last ten UEL away games in the competition proper (D2, L7).
