Bristol City – Cardiff Prediction and Preview

  • After an impressive pair of victories over Middlesbrough and Southampton, the Bristol City faithful may have started to dream of a push for a play-off finish. However, consecutive defeats to sides starting the day in the relegation zone have put pay to those ambitions, leaving the Robins entering this Severnside Derby with Cardiff City looking to avoid losing three Championship matches on the spin for the first time this campaign.
  • Boss Liam Manning admitted his side were “nowhere near the level” in defeat to Sheffield Wednesday last time out, while it also left Bristol City closer to the drop zone than the top-six in terms of points pre-round. Concerningly, the Robins are now without a clean sheet in nine league games, and could be set for further misery here having lost both of the last two H2Hs 2-0, most recently in October’s reverse fixture.
  • That victory placed Cardiff inside the top-six, but Erol Bulut’s men have found consistency hard to come by ever since, as that remains the last time they strung together consecutive Championship wins. The Bluebirds have that chance here however, as a 2-1 victory over Stoke on Saturday ended a run of four games without a win (D1, L3), and in creating a nine-point gap between themselves and the relegation zone, perhaps alleviated any lingering fears of a survival scrap.
  • Bulut will doubtless remain concerned about his side’s patchy away form having lost five of their last eight on their Championship travels (W3). That includes successive defeats heading into this one, leaving Cardiff vulnerable to losing three on the spin for the first time since February 2023. And recent travels to Ashton Gate are unlikely to inspire confidence, as they’ve lost both of their last two trips here, conceding five total goals in the process.
  • Players to watch: A season-ending injury to Sam Bell leaves Tommy Conway and Rob Dickie as Bristol City’s only two players to have recorded at least three home goals this Championship season. Cardiff defender Perry Ng has scored five league goals this term, three of which came on the road and another in the previous meeting with Bristol City.
  • Hot stat: A league-high ten of Bristol City’s 17 Championship home games this season were won by the pre-match outsider (D3, L4).
