Verona – Sassuolo Prediction and Preview

  • The Serie A relegation battle is shaping up to be an interesting spectacle this season, with five teams from 15th to 19th separated by just three points after 26 rounds. Currently just above the bottom three ahead of this matchday, Verona could lose that luxury to Sassuolo on head-to-head record if they fail to win here, as they were beaten in the reverse fixture 3-1 back in September, a result which subsequently started a 14-game winless run in the league from which they are yet to recover.
  • Verona have managed to draw three of their last five games at least (L2), including a creditable one against Juventus, but anything other than a win here would see them lose ground in their fight for safety this term. Despite their recent wayward form though, they’re can still be a stubborn team to face, as Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi has been the venue for each of their last three league wins, with the hosts being beaten just once across their last seven matches here (W2, D4).
  • Considering that Sassuolo were handed their joint-fourth heaviest defeat (6-1) by Napoli on Wednesday in Emiliano Bigica’s first game as caretaker boss, the visitors will arrive here very short of confidence. That result further underlined their unwanted credentials as one of the worst defensive sides in the division and after taking only one point from their last seven top-flight games (L6), the Neroverdi are struggling to quell relegation fears.
  • They haven’t done much on the road to address those concerns either, as Sassuolo have now lost their last six away games, conceding 3+ goals in four matches during that run. The gloomy mood would be lifted with a much-needed win here, but that’s only if they maintain their recent impressive record at this venue, having won four of their last five away top-flight H2Hs (L1).
  • Players to watchDarko Lazović seems to reserve his best for this opposition, with the Verona midfielder contributing five goals (G2, A3) in his last four H2Hs. Although not as prolific, Kristian Thorstvedt has managed to leave his mark early, having scored Sassuolo’s opening goal in his last four league scoring games.
  • Hot stat: Half of Sassuolo’s 26 league games this campaign have seen the match opener scored before the 16th minute.
