Inter – Genoa Prediction and Preview

  • Inter Milan continued their romp towards the Serie A title by thrashing Atalanta 4-0 on Wednesday to make it 11 consecutive wins in all competitions, their second-best such run since 1929/30. It was also their fourth straight league win while scoring 4+ goals, moving the Nerazzurri into a 12 point lead after 26 rounds. Only three teams took points off Simone Inzaghi’s men across their last 20 league games (W17, D3), but they’ll be wary here given one of them were Genoa in the reverse fixture (D 1-1).
  • That goal was the only one conceded by Inter across the last nine top-flight H2Hs (W7, D2), and the Nerazzurri’s imperious recent record at the San Siro, where they’ve won their last eight home league games, seven of which were accompanied by a clean sheet, suggests the hosts could tighten their grip on the Scudetto here.
  • Though history isn’t sympathetic to their cause, a run of just one defeat from their last 11 league games (W4, D6, L1) suggests Genoa are unlikely to go down without a fight. The Red and Blues have built up a 13-point buffer to the drop zone pre-round, so fears of an immediate return to the second-tier are long gone as they go in search of a first H2H league victory since February 2018.
  • A major factor in their recent improvement has been getting more comfortable on the road. A seven-match winless away run (D1, L6) between September and December threatened to derail their season, but Genoa have put together a five-match unbeaten sequence on the road since (W2, D3). Late goals have haunted them in spite of that, with two of those draws seeing Alberto Gilardino’s men concede in the 90th minute or beyond to drop points.
  • Players to watch: Inter’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan found himself in the referee’s notebook in the reverse fixture, but netted a hat-trick against Genoa on his first meeting with them when he was a Roma player. Visiting forward Mateo Retegui likes to strike early, with five of his last six league goals coming before the hour mark.
  • Hot stat: Genoa have conceded 12 goals beyond the 80th minute in Serie A this season, the same number scored by Inter in that phase.
