Sporting CP – Atalanta Prediction and Preview

  • After sharing the stage in Group D of the UEFA Europa League earlier in the season, Sporting Lisbon and Atalanta will do it all again when they meet in the Round of 16. It was Atalanta who won 2-1 when they collided at the Estádio José Alvalade in October, while a draw ensued on Italian soil in November, meaning Sporting will be out to level the H2H record which currently favours their visitors after seven encounters (W2, D2, L3).
  • Those two matches only served to worsen Sporting’s already faulty record against Italian teams, in which they won just five of their previous 33 meetings. The Lions will be out to prove they’re the ‘king of the jungle’ this time around by looking to leverage a handy recent record of losing just two of their last 14 matches in UEFA competitions (W5, D7).
  • Atalanta have outdone their hosts in terms of European form, with their undefeated display in topping Group D (W4, D2) meaning they’ve lost just two of their 20 Europa League games (W12, D6). The 2-1 away win to Sporting during the group stage would also have gone a long way to putting to rest the ghosts of their heartbreaking trip to Lisbon during the COVID-impacted 2019/20 Champions League, where Gasperini’s men collapsed late to lose 2-1 to PSG in a neutral one-off quarter-final.
  • Their recent exploits won’t offer much additional confidence after consecutive domestic losses heading into this tie. Before that, Atalanta had gone unbeaten in ten matches (W8, D2), and it’s that standard they’ll need to reclaim to preserve a proud record of losing just two of their last 16 UEFA away matches (W8, D6).
  • Players to watch: Sporting’s Viktor Gyökeres has found the back of the net in an astounding eight of his last nine competitive appearances and was responsible for a goal and an assist against Atalanta in the group stage. He’ll be in a race to score with Ademola Lookman, who has netted the match opener in five of his last six goalscoring outings for Atalanta, including their weekend win over Bologna.
  • Hot streak: Sporting did not lose the first leg in any of their prior four Europa League Round of 16 ties (W2, D2).
